Awards Nomination!!

September 12, 2023 By Deborah Jenkins

It’s been an exciting month! I’m honoured to have been shortlisted with five other amazing local business owners for the Doncaster Business Awards 2023 “Self-Employed Person of the Year” Award!

In the words of Doncaster Chamber this award is “Recognising Doncaster’s vital self-employed community, this category honours determined individuals who bravely manage their own businesses. Despite juggling multiple responsibilities, these entrepreneurs excel in various areas.”

Looking forward to the big awards ceremony in December! There will be some interviews between now and then, and then we get to put the glad rags on and celebrate the best of all the businesses in Doncaster!!!

Shalom has a new home!!

July 13, 2023 By Deborah Jenkins

Long time no post! I’m a bit rubbish at this whole blog thing, obviously. After a complicated change of use at my previous location, it became clear that it was time to look for a new home. Very swiftly I found a gorgeous little space in a quiet courtyard in Bawtry.

It has lovely character with wood paneling and old beams on the ceiling. It is bright, cosy and quiet. We have free parking on site and additional parking on the street outside. Everything else is still the same as always at Shalom!

Other small recent updates include that I now require a 50% deposit at time of booking for all clients who aren’t members. Please note as well that my prices will increase on 1st of September. This is due to the crazy increases in the prices of supplies in recent months plus the increase expenses in my new location.

Give me a shout to book in to my new Bawtry location! Just a reminder that if you are trying to contact me be sure to leave a voicemail or a text message and I’ll get back to you ASAP!

Covid policy……..yes I still have one!

April 19, 2022 By Deborah Jenkins

Two years on and we are now “living with” covid. At Shalom this looks a little different than in many businesses. We are back to almost no restrictions being enforced on us, but the standards of cleanliness are impeccable as ever! Washing hands, fresh linens for each client and all equipment thoroughly sanitised between appointments has always been the case and will always continue.

The main changes still lingering are in timings. Allowing extra time between clients to air the room means less appointments each day. I book five appointments maximum at 10, 12, 2, 4 & 6pm. I will also ask at time of booking if you have been diagnosed with covid in the past three months. I have been doing this since we reopened after the first lockdown.

The evidence I had gathered showed an increased risk of clotting for a few months following infection. This leads to an increased risk of DVT, PE or stroke following a massage as we increase blood flow in the body during a treatment. In most people this is a good thing and increases well-being; however in someone recovering from Covid it could be very serious or even life threatening. Dislodging even a small clot that you didn’t know you had could lead to serious complications.

At Shalom, I always err on the side of caution and would never want to put a client at risk, even unknowingly. This month an article about the clotting has been published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) that confirms my concern in a medical study researched in Sweden over the past year. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2022/04/covid-patients-may-be-higher-risk-blood-clots-6-months?fbclid=IwAR1-JvZdI5ykG_9EPVyvWGE1sYh-idrL2UVqIiLHPdEyOLMej0wBca1EVrE

The policy of waiting for three weeks after a covid jab is that most people with side effects tend to have them within the three weeks. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer side effects it is important that they are reported as such. Early on last year some doctors were blaming side effects of the jab on various complementary therapies received around that time. This messes up the vital data collection and sadly leaves therapists open to litigation if a doctor has blamed a complication on them.

So for both our safety, I will offer no massages for three months post a covid infection. Reflexology and facials are available instead. No treatments at all for three weeks post a covid specific jab. I’m sorry if this is inconvenient but I value my clients safety above all else!

Why is it called ‘Holistic therapy’?

March 27, 2022 By Deborah Jenkins

Well, I only missed one month so far! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Not too bad I guess! 🤷🏻‍♀️😜🤣

The medical dictionary definition of’holistic’ is as follows:

holistic [ho-lis´tik]

pertaining to totality, or to the whole. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the concept of holistic health and the notion that the physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of a person’s life must be viewed as an integrated whole.

I call what I do holistic therapy because I try to look at the whole person. Allopathic medicine tends to just treat a symptom.

You have a headache – allopathic medicine usually give pain pills , maybe do a head scan. I ask about your stresses – mental, emotional and physical. We may blend oils that help on multiple levels, do reflexology to clear nerve pathways in the body and/or relax muscles of neck and shoulders that may be spasming.

The holistic approach may take longer to stop the headaches but it usually us a longer lasting affect. The pills may stop pain quicker but may be needed over and over again often bringing side effects with them.

I allow 1&1/2 – 2 hours per appointment. This is why we can go through your consultation in depth. This allows time to talk through your concerns and symptoms since our last treatment.

Every appointment we go over your oil blend and see if an ‘oil change’ is required to see further improvement.  Come prepared for a chat. Let’s see what is happening in your life. Let’s talk through how you feel – and how you want to feel!

What are you struggling with? Let’s try a holistic approach and see how things improve

Let’s do this!!

January 10, 2022 By Deborah Jenkins

Well, let’s see if I can blog more than once a year, shall we? Hahaha! The plan is at least once a month – twice if I get my act together.

Hopefully you follow my social media and the updates on my website – so you realise things have changed a little since last March when I wrote my last post. My location has changed and with it my days/hours.

Loving my rooms based in Rossington Miners Welfare and looking forward to growing this year and getting the classroom in full swing. I’m currently doing some reflexology taster workshops in Manchester at a women’s centre one day a week and loving every minute of teaching.

Treatments on my menu are the same, as is my pricing. I have chosen not to raise prices so far, despite rising costs. If it becomes necessary I will of course give all my lovely clients plenty of warning. Also, be aware that when I do raise prices, I always grant current members a price freeze for 12 months. So, joining the membership now can lock in the current price for you for quite some time to come!

Did you know that my Shalom Membership will be capped at 50 members? After that, there will be a waiting list to join. This is so that I have room in my schedule to give my lovely members to priority treatment they deserve! As my membership list is nearly half full now, I’d advise you to get in quick before it fills up and the doors to that avenue of discount are closed – you don’t want to be left out in the cold!

January is a great time to join the membership and make your well-being a priority in 2022. It is a membership that, unlike the gym membership you got last year, is regularly used and actually looked forward to each month with anticipation.

I’ll leave it there for now, as I have a BIG celebration to prepare for this week! 😉

We will be back soon!

March 22, 2021 By Deborah Jenkins

Not long now and hopefully we will be able to reopen under the government guidelines! Yippee!! I am starting to be contacted by people wanting to book in for dates after the 12th of April so I thought I’d write and explain how I will be doing this going forward.

Last year we were told we could reopen on July 4th. Then on July 3rd the government announced that complementary therapists weren’t included in the list of businesses reopening that day. 🙁 So we had lots of scrambling around to cancel appointments and reschedule. Rather than mess everyone around I am not taking bookings just yet this time. The government has promised us that we will have at least 7 days notice of confirmation that we can reopen.

So, a week before we can reopen I will firstly contact all my members to book in their treatments as they have continued paying throughout the lockdown and are owed treatments now. This is a benefit of membership – priority booking at all times! (Join now to enjoy this priority booking)

After my members are booked in I will then contact all of those on my waiting list. There are several people who have contacted me during lockdown and asked to be put on the waiting list, feel free to add your name to this list if you like, anytime in the next three weeks. 😉 Then finally, I will advertise publicly that my bookings are open for anyone else who would like to book.

I feel this is the most fair way to deal with bookings when I reopen. I would rather be sure we are opening before booking anyone, than have to mess everyone around with cancellations and rescheduling. (Besides that fact it makes my diary look messy! 😉 LOL!!

All being well, my first day back in the treatment room will be April 13th and I will be doing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am-9pm. Friday’s will be mobile (reflexology only) from 10am-5pm and then Friday evenings at Cavendish from 7pm. I will also be working the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month from 10am-6pm at the treatment room. Hopefully this will accommodate everyone’s schedules with these days/times.

I look forward to seeing you all and helping you get your well-being back up to the best level it can be in the coming months! I’ve missed you all and doing the work I love.
